Is this the start of a major change in the way organisations engage with their customers? I hope so. Customer service and ethics need to be truly at the heart of organisations' cultures. I don't mean overdosing on those supposedly "motivational" posters. I mean by ensuring every staff member works to an accountable code of conduct and standard. I mean by ensuring that every customer's communication is welcomed rather than just "processed in line with procedures". I mean by organisations employing people who truly believe in doing the right thing rather than programmable drones. I mean by organisations being open and honest with customers, not hiding behind misleading spin and mendacity.

Gentlemen of the IAB, you seem to have missed out much of what has gone on in matters Phorm related. That or you are completely ignoring it in the hope that it and people like me will go away. Which they won't.

The very reason the UK "government" is facing legal action from the EU is because of its complete failure to enforce the law against BT and Phorm in the first place! When you have a government unwilling to enforce a law protecting peoples's data rights then any self-regulatory scheme is pointless.

By advocating Phorm's business model and methods (if you advocate Phorm then you advocate both) you are showing that you lack the understanding that others have as well possibly something in the ethical department. Do your guidelines include unwarranted smear campaigns against people legitimately campaigning against you? Do your guidelines include refusing to publish legal opinion when challenged to do so?

By associating yourselves with Phorm you do yourselves and your industry no credit.

Need I remind you what Bill Hicks said about marketing and advertising?

Some excellent news popped up today. BT (the UK telecoms firm who launched secret and many believe illegal testing of Phorm's technology) has announced that it will not roll out Phorm's Webwise "product".

That's right, BT have dropped Phorm.

Sadly this isn't a sudden Damascus Road-like conversion to ethical business practices. It seems that Ian Livingstone's pages about the way BT does business are just spin after all. But it is still a very large blow to Phorm. BT says it will be keeping an eye on the Behavioural Targeting arena. So will anti DPI campaigners. Be assured that this announcement does not diminish your part in the illegal trials of Phorm's technology in 2007. Anti DPI campaigners will keep watch on BT the same as they have been.

A couple of questions come to mind here. Did BT give Kent Ertugrul prior notice of this announcement? How long has Kent known this was coming? Given the listed status of Phorm and the recent "advice" issued by Astaire Securities, if this was something Kent knew was coming, should the LSE and shareholders been informed?
